Industry 4.0: the first 90 days

How a mid-sized business approaches connected manufacturing without a mega-project.

Days 1–30: goal and inventory

Which question should production be able to answer? Typical are downtime reasons, utilisation or quality. Then check which machines provide data (e.g. via OPC UA).

Days 31–60: connect one machine

Start with one machine or line. An edge gateway buffers data and passes it on via MQTT. Separate production and office networks.

Days 61–90: dashboard and evaluation

A simple dashboard with a few KPIs is enough to begin. Decide based on experience whether and where to expand.

What to avoid

Too many KPIs at once, write access without a security concept and projects without a clear owner.
